about

In the summer of 2007, a solo album was recorded in the basement of a house that was destined to be demolished in Lynhurst, on the edge of St. Thomas, Ontario. Kaleb Hikele’s first solo recordings were somewhat unintentional and rushed to accomodate the looming situation, however the album was eventually released in small handmade quantities months after his bands first full, and only, full length- “Far From Freedom” by The Capitol. As more songs began to collect for the inclusion in the next Capitol record, Kaleb began to demo his music out of curiosity with full band instrumentation. As his house was slowly rebuilt through the winter months, Kaleb dug a hole in the basement of his other home to record a handful of new songs for the intentional release to schoolmates at his highschool for free.

He thought of an idea to start an Open Mic series that would be staged in the drama room of the school, so on a week in December of 2007, two lunch hours were booked and a third was quickly put together to present an open stage to a packed crowd of students listening to their peers. At the end of each show, Kaleb played one or two songs before he was interupted by the hallways bell- each of those days, he handed out around 50 discs of material from “The Second Time Around”, his second solo release, for free to the audience. The Open Mic series continued once every month till the end of the school year, and survived for a few years following its original conception. When this album was released Digitally online for the first time in 2012, it featured the original tracklisting with a few extra tunes circa the albums songwriting period. All the songs were polished in Kaleb’s basement studio, on the east side of Toronto in 2012.
